Summary: Who will be the winner of the Gingerbread House competition? Not Nino.
Notes: This one is based on my Wing!fic series.
Sho watched on in amusement as Jun bustled around the kitchen adding the final touches to his gingerbread house.
Although to Sho's inexperienced eye it looked more like a gingerbread palace. How Jun had managed to make a perfectly round turret out of a single piece boggled his mind. The roof of the turret and the entire building consisted of tiny individual gingerbread tiles frosted with carefully placed blobs of white icing 'snow'.
He stepped over and ran his fingers along the soft edge of Jun's right wing.
Jun whipped around and shook the piping bag threateningly in Sho's direction. "Hands off. I'm too busy for hanky-panky right now."
"I can see that." Sho smiled at the three storey construction. "But that’s not what I intended. There's a bit of icing stuck on your feathers."
Jun immediately tensed and twisted his head to try and see what Sho had seen. "Get it off!"
"Don’t panic. It's just a little blob." Sho carefully removed it and smoothed the feather back into place. "It's gone now."
"I'm still going to take a shower before we head upstairs to Ohno and Aiba’s party." Jun untied his apron and headed towards the bathroom. "If you touch my gingerbread house while I'm gone, I will yank one of your scales off."
Sho hastily snatched his hand back, and folded his wings protectively against his body.
Just before he disappeared from view, Jun called back over his shoulder, "If you look in the tin on the bench, you'll find the batch of Christmas cookies I baked for you. Just don't eat too many. There's bound to be heaps of food at the party."
Sho nodded eagerly and selected a tiny cinnamon star, which he munched on happily as he unwrapped the bakery gingerbread house which was his contribution to the gathering.
It had been Aiba’s idea to have everyone bring a gingerbread house to the party, which had been greeted with varying levels of enthusiasm. But since it was impossible to deny Aiba’s puppy eyes, everyone agreed to the plan.
Even though Aiba had emphasised that it wasn't a competition, everyone knew that it absolutely was.

Aiba’s wings shimmered as he stood back to admire his handiwork. He nodded with satisfaction as he carefully placed his gingerbread house on the trestle table which Ohno had set up along the wall of their living room.
"What’s up with that?" Nino peered at it, and tilted his head to one side. "The last time I checked, cables weren't edible."
Jun adjusted the position of his gingerbread palace before looking over Nino's shoulder. "Are you sure that it's safe?"
"Probably?" Aiba replied with a distinct lack of confidence. "After the first one caught fire, I made a bunch of adjustments though, so it's probably okay."
"Even though it was kind of charred after we extinguished the flames, it was still pretty darn tasty," Ohno added supportively, as he placed his creation at a safe distance from Aiba’s.
Sho hid his store bought house behind Jun’s towering effort, and looked at Ohno’s work from every available angle, in an attempt to make sense of it.
The gingerbread was covered in various shades of blue icing, and cut into random shapes. The mostly curved pieces were haphazardly piled up on a yellow plate.
Somehow, if Sho looked at it from the corner of his eye, the pieces almost seemed to be moving. Although Ohno kept his filmy wings tightly furled between his shoulder blades and hidden from view as usual, Sho was reminded of the way they had drifted in the waves during their group outing to the beach at the tail-end of summer.
"Let the judging commence," Toma declared loudly, making the most of his role as judge, as he flared his tawny wings out to create an impressive silhouette. The dramatic effect was lessened by the tinsel trimmed clipboard he was holding, and the fluffy reindeer antler headband which he was wearing on top of his head.
"Hold on there, Rudolph," Nino interjected. "I haven't added my entry yet."
Toma rolled his eyes. "I already know what your entry is."
"You only saw it as a work in progress, so you shouldn't pre-judge," Nino complained.
"Fine," Toma sighed, and stepped back to allow Nino to approach the table.
Nino smirked smugly as he placed down a framed photograph of a massive gingerbread house. He looked around the room seeking praise for his efforts.
Jun was the first one to comment. “That’s not a gingerbread house.”
“You may need to have the prescription for your glasses checked,” Nino replied with fake concern. He picked up the frame and held it closer to Jun’s face. “See?”
Jun batted it away. “Even without my glasses, I can see that it’s a PHOTO of a gingerbread house.”
“Still technically counts.” Nino polished the frame with his sweater sleeve and put it back in place, as his black wings took on a jaunty angle.
Sho looked closely at the picture. “This is from a bakery catalogue. Why didn’t you bring the real thing like I did?”
“Why would I spend money on an actual one, when I knew that there would be far too much here for us to eat anyway?” Nino replied with a shrug.
The tips of Jun’s feathers took on a faint shade of red, and his eyebrows scrunched together dangerously. Sho hastily intervened, steering Jun over to the drinks table, where he fixed him a cup of Aiba’s special extra boozy punch.
Toma made a show of looking at Nino’s entry and then pointedly crossing his name off his judging list with excessive force.
Nino scowled for a moment, before bursting into laughter as he accepted a cup of punch from Aiba. “It was worth a shot. I thought that sleeping with the judge would get me an advantage.”
"I am incorruptible," Toma said grandly, earning an eye roll from Nino.
xx
Aiba fiddled with the wires attached to his gingerbread house as the others helped themselves to more of his punch, along with chunks of Sho’s store-bought contribution. Sho had withdrawn it from the contest and broken it into bite sized pieces for them all to enjoy.
"Mine would definitely taste better than this," Nino grumbled, as he helped himself to another piece.
"I couldn't really say, since I don't remember the last time I ate paper," Toma replied with a level of sarcasm which made Nino look at him with admiration.
"Okay, I think it's ready." Aiba stood up and pressed a small switch at the back of the gingerbread house. His wings drooped as nothing happened at first. Just as he was about to admit defeat, lights flickered on behind the sugar stained-glass windows.
Everyone gasped as the lights sent a rainbow of colours onto the white wall behind the table. Puffs of white smoke came out the top of the candy cane chimney as the gingerbread reindeer standing at the front of the house nodded it's head in time to the Christmas carol being played by a music box hidden in the depths of the construction.
"And we have a winner!" Toma removed his reindeer antlers and placed them on top of Aiba’s fluffy brown hair.
Aiba blushed deeply as his friends congratulated him, and Ohno placed a kiss on his cheek.
When he thought back to before the time when he had moved into this house, Aiba felt like a different person. The iridescent shimmer of his wings was an outward manifestation of the self confidence and joy which now filled his heart, as he joined his friends in a toast for a happy new year.
