Title: Gingerbread Wars #3 (2021 Christmas Drabbles)
Pairing(s): Matsumoto Jun/Ohno Satoshi
Genres: Christmas fluff
Rating: G
Summary: Jun has a secret crush, but is it reciprocated?

As Jun tried to see through the bakery window without looking as if he was doing so, the glass fogged up, obscuring his view.

He strained his eyes as he attempted to spot the face which kept him returning again and again.

The sight of the small figure behind the counter made his heart skip a beat. The day was off to a great start.

The door chimed as he entered and the tanned man behind the counter graced Jun with a smile which never changed. He picked up his serving tongs, and gestured to the glass fronted cabinets, "Welcome. What do you fancy today?"

In Jun’s mind, he replied, You, Ohno-san. But as always his courage failed him at the last moment, and he jabbed his finger at an item at random. "One of those and a skinny mocha latte please, Ohno-san."

Ohno pursed his lips, and tilted his head. He frowned at Jun. "Are you sure about that? I thought you were allergic to strawberries?"

Jun's eyes followed the direction where his finger was pointing, and he felt the tips of his ears grow hot. His random panicked selection had led him to pick an individual strawberry shortcake; the only item in the cabinet which he couldn’t actually eat. "Oh, um, oops. I meant the lemon tart beside it."

Ohno smiled and nodded as he placed the pastry in a small box. "Makes sense that you like something a bit sour, since you're so sweet."

Jun wanted to respond, but when he opened his mouth no sound came out. He tapped his credit card and snatched up the takeaway coffee cup and the pastry box before dashing out the door.

++

A few weeks passed before Jun managed to pluck up the courage to return to the bakery.

It was the week before Christmas, and the streets were illuminated with strings of white icicle lights, making the light dusting of snow sparkle.

It was almost closing time, and the display cases were bound to be almost empty, but Jun had missed his exchanges with the quiet baker with the warm smile.

Jun felt bad about running away the last time, and in his pocket he carried a small package of homemade chocolates to offer as an apology. It was probably silly to bring chocolates to a professional like Ohno-san, but he had poured his heart and soul into the truffles and he hoped that Ohno would enjoy their filling of crumbled gingerbread, blended with rum soaked dried fruit and smooth dark chocolate ganache.

The door chime played a Christmas tune as Jun entered the bakery, which was decorated with an eclectic mixture of twinkling lights and handcrafted figurines.

As expected, the cases were empty and Ohno was wiping down the counter. His sleepy expression brightened as he caught sight of Jun. “Welcome! I’m about to close, so there’s not really much to pick from, and the coffee machine is turned off, but I can still make you a cup of hot chocolate.”

Jun’s hand hovered over his pocket where the box of chocolates was nestled, but he chickened out at the last moment. “That sounds perfect. Thank you.”

Ohno gave Jun a smile which made his heart flutter. “Sounds good to me too.” He walked over and switched off the LED ‘open’ sign in the window. “I think I’ll join you. Take a seat, and I’ll bring it over.”

Jun took a couple of deep breaths and placed the chocolates on his lap, ready to hand them to Ohno when he returned.

“Here you go.” Ohno handed a wide bowl of hot chocolate to Jun and put his own mug down on the opposite side of the table. “Since you don’t like things which are too sweet. I left the marshmallows off yours.”

Ohno’s drink was topped by a mountain of pink and white marshmallows, while Jun’s had a thin layer of whipped cream dusted with cinnamon.

As Jun took an appreciative sip of his drink, Ohno pulled a plate out from behind his back, and set it down in front of him.

It contained a large heart shaped cookie made from gingerbread. The icing was red and there were large swirling letters piped on it in white icing.

The words were rather hard to read, but Jun finally made sense of them.

DATE ME

He blinked at Ohno with a growing sense of excitement. “Is that a question or an order?”

Ohno blushed beneath his tan. “Sorry that it’s a bit of a mess. I was in a hurry, and you make me so nervous I got the size of the letters all wrong and didn’t have room to write it properly. I could scrape it off and start again…”

Jun smiled as butterflies took flight in his stomach. He caught hold of Ohno’s wrist to prevent him from snatching the plate back. “Don’t you dare take it away. It’s perfect. And the answer is ‘yes’.”

Ohno slumped back in his chair with a relieved sigh.

For a few moments they stared at each other in silence and sipped their drinks, before Jun remembered his gift. He handed over the chocolates. “These are gingerbread too. It seems that we have something in common.”

“I’m sure that there are more things than just gingerbread, but it’s a good start.” Ohno pulled a pocket knife out of his pocket and cut one in two. He handed half to Jun who blushed again as their fingertips met with a spark of electricity.
