Jun’s back made a satisfying crack as he stretched his arms over his head and twisted sideways. In the week since his discharge from hospital, this was the first time he’d been allowed out of bed.

Sho hovered nervously as he watched Jun flexing his stiff limbs. “Just because Shun-sensei has said that bed rest is no longer necessary, it doesn't mean you should over exert yourself.”

The glare which Jun turned on him made Sho take an involuntary step back.

Jun hissed, and showed a hint of fang. “I haven't been outside in almost two weeks. Even prisoners are permitted to spend time outside in the exercise yard.”

“It was for the benefit of you, and our youngling. Shun wouldn't have ordered it unless it was necessary. I thought you understood that,” Sho replied with a frown; confused as to where Jun’s sudden anger was coming from.

Jun retracted his fangs and sat back down on the bed with a thump. “Sorry. I guess I just need some fresh air, and some alone time. I’m grateful to everyone for visiting me and keeping me occupied, but I'm starting to feel a bit smothered.”

“I understand.” Sho picked up the hairbrush from Jun’s dressing table and ran it through Jun’s hair.

Jun slumped forward and rested his face against Sho’s stomach. His anger disappeared as quickly as it came as he breathed in his mate’s scent.

One of Jun’s hair bands lay within reach, and Sho smoothed Jun’s hair before gathering it into a bunch and tying it loosely at his nape. “Feeling better now, Pet?”

“Yes, thank you,” Jun murmured. He sat up straight and looked up at Sho. “Want to join me for a walk in the garden? And before you say anything, I'll take it slow, and bring along a glass of blood to sip while we look at the stars.”

“Sounds perfect.” Sho cupped Jun’s jaw and kissed him tenderly. “Just like you.”

“Flatterer,” Jun grumbled. But he still looked pleased.

Sakamoto-san brought the car to a stop and Aiba stuck his head out of the front passenger window and waved to Nino. “Hi, Agent Ninomiya. This is going to be so much fun.”

Nino doubted very much, but couldn't help but be charmed by the human’s infectious grin. “We’ll see, but hello anyway.”

Jun flung the back passenger door open and slid over so that Nino could join him. “Who doesn't enjoy shopping?”

“Me, for one,” Nino said as he buckled his seat belt. “I don't understand why you need Aiba and me for company; isn't that what mates are for?”

“Sho is busy, and anyway he has terrible taste in clothes. Before we mated, Aiba used to buy them all for him.” Jun shared a smile with Aiba who looked slightly embarrassed; he had no idea that Jun knew.

Nino ordered all of his clothes online in bulk and couldn't see why it was necessary to go to actual shops. “Fine, I’ll come along if you really want me to, but I can't promise to be enthusiastic about it.”

“Not even if I am planning on buying you a new pair of running shoes?” Jun asked innocently. “Because if it's going to make you unhappy, we can always drop you off back at your apartment.”

Immediately Nino sat up straighter. The only thing he loved more than his colourful running shoes, was the idea of free running shoes. “Whatever gave you the impression that I'm not happy? Let's get this show on the road!”

****

The shopping trip wasn't as much fun as Jun had hoped.

It had begun well, with Nino making the assistant at the sporting goods store pull out every single pair of running shoes in his size. In the end, he had narrowed it down to a choice of two. One pair started off yellow on the toes and shaded to purple at the heels, and the second was a bright mix of all the colours of the rainbow. They also happened to be the most expensive ones in the store. After Jun decided to buy them both, Nino had offered to be his slave for life.

The trouble began when they went to buy clothing for Jun’s vampling.

The female vampire store owner obsequiously trailed them around the aisles, trying to sell Jun the most expensive and unnecessary items, and asking if she could publicize the fact that he shopped there.

While Aiba selected the most practical and durable items from his extensive list of things which Jun needed to fit out the nursery, Nino stuck close to Jun, aware that although two of his best agents were shadowing their movements, he was still in a public place, and vulnerable.

Not wanting the mood of the evening to be ruined, Jun gritted his teeth and attempted to concentrate on the array of tiny clothes. They seemed impossibly small, and his heart melted as he picked through the racks.

The owner was annoying, but she had the best stock, so Jun was willing to endure her overly pushy sales tactics. What he didn't expect was her placing her hands on his belly and remarking that he had kept his figure.

Jun hissed and stepped back. His eyes were like purple fire, shot through with sparks of lavender as his claws lengthened. He raised his hand to slash at the vampire, but Nino swiftly stepped in and pushed her away with enough force to knock over a nearby rack of toys.

"How dare you," she blustered angrily. "I will have you arrested for assault."

"I don't think so, madam," Nino replied. There was a cold gleam in his eyes, as he ensured that she stayed away from Jun, who was still hissing and spitting angrily in her direction. "You placed your hands on a Royal without permission. Think yourself lucky that you are still alive."

Aiba immediately dropped the goods he had selected and hovered helplessly around Jun, who was clenching and unclenching his fists in an attempt to calm his feral side. After a few deep breaths, the fire in Jun's eyes died down to embers and he retracted his claws and fangs.

"There's a great coffee shop two floors down," Aiba said gently. "They make the sweetest and fluffiest drinks in town. "I'll treat you to my favourite and you can sit down for a while. Unless you want to go home, of course."

Jun shook his head and squared his shoulders. "I'm not going to let her ruin this for us." He beamed at Aiba as if the drama of the preceding minutes had already been forgotten. "I'd love to try something sweet. Maybe we can even persuade Nino to have a taste."

One of Nino’s agents materialized behind the shop owner and took charge of her as he joined Jun and Aiba and escorted them both from the store.

A happy sigh escaped Jun's lips as he put down the cup after taking his first sip of his salted caramel hazelnut white hot chocolate. "You were right, Aiba. It is incredible."

"I know, right?" Aiba replied as he wiped a blob of whipped cream from the tip of his nose. "Are you sure you don't want to at least try it, Nino-san?"

Nino shuddered and cringed away from the overly sweet beverages. "Yuk. Those things seem like something which should be used as instruments of torture."

"Maybe I should take one upstairs for that horrible store owner," Jun mused. "I'm sure she would look fabulous with it tipped over her head."

Aiba ducked his head and sank down in his seat. "I'm sorry about that. It was me who found them online."

"It's not your fault. She should stick to online sales. The way she deals with customers is terrible." Jun broke off the corner of a dark chocolate cookie and chewed on it thoughtfully. "It's a good thing that Nino stepped in when he did, because I was seriously considering ripping her throat out," he added with a dreamy smile.

Nino and Aiba exchanged worried looks, as Jun sipped his drink and continued to go into rather gruesome detail about what he would've liked to have done to the rude vampire.

Sho ran into Aiba in the kitchen when he went to grab a snack and drink for Jun to enjoy in the bath. Jun hadn’t really said much about the shopping expedition, apart from the fact that he’d enjoyed spending time with Nino and Aiba, before immediately disappearing into the bathroom.

“Did you get everything you needed?” He asked Aiba, who offered to slice some liver for Jun, who had taken to eating it completely raw since reaching his eighth month of pregnancy.

Aiba looked slightly shifty as he replied. “Um, we had to go to a couple of different places, but we ended up with mostly everything. There should be no problem with the heavier pieces of furniture being delivered well before your vampling arrives.”

“And yet you seem hesitant to tell me something,” Sho probed.

“There was a bit of a problem in one of the stores, with the owner being pushy, but Nino and his agents soon put her in her place.”

Sho narrowed his eyes at that, but he could tell that wasn't what was worrying Aiba right now. “And?”

“And Jun-sama almost went feral, but then he was cheerful,” Aiba replied hesitantly.

Confusion furrowed Sho’s brow. He didn't understand what Aiba was trying to tell him. “But that's surely a good thing?”

Aiba handed over the plate of wafer thin slices of liver, and looked at Sho with a serious expression. “Not when he was cheerfully discussing how he would enjoy ripping her to shreds. I apologize if I am overstepping boundaries, but I feel as if there is something odd about the way he is acting. I only know about human pregnancies, and I'm used to my Emi’s mood swings, but she has never threatened violence...well not until she is in labour and threatens to cut my dick off.”

“I have no idea about vampire pregnancies either,” Sho admitted. “I have noticed that Jun’s mood has been a little changeable lately. Thanks for telling me. I'll keep a close eye on him.”

****

Bubbles obscured most of Jun’s body as he lay back in the bath with his eyes closed, apart from the smooth dome of his belly. Sho carefully placed the plate of liver and glass of blood orange juice down on the edge of the basin. “Don't fall asleep, Pet.”

Jun opened one eye and gave Sho a lazy smile. “My body feels so much lighter in the water; and don't even think of making any beached whale jokes.”

“You’re beautiful.” Sho bent down and kissed the warm, damp skin on Jun’s shoulder.

“I would invite you to join me, but I'm afraid there isn't room in here for the three of us.” Jun pulled himself more upright and looked around curiously. “Is that liver that I can smell?”

“There's more than enough room for me too, and yes, that is liver. Let me fetch it for you.”

Sho held out the plate, and Jun snatched it from his hand and began stuffing the raw slivers into his mouth.

When Sho reached out to try a morsel, Jun snarled and slashed the skin on the back of his hand, making three long stripes of blood well up.

Sho pulled his hand back and cradled it to his chest as Jun looked up at him in horror.

Jun looked down at his own hands and was stunned to see that his claws were unsheathed. Tears welled in his eyes as he dropped the plate on the floor and hastened to apologize. “I’m so, so, sorry. I didn't even realize that I’d slashed at you until it had happened. I constantly seem to be fighting to retain control of myself.”

“”I’m perfectly fine. It was just a scratch, and it has already disappeared.” Sho could sense the distress coming from Jun in waves. He held out his hand to show that it was blemish free. As he calmed his mate, he could now see what Aiba had meant about Jun behaving oddly. It was definitely time for a phone call to Shun-sensei to arrange a house call as soon as he was available.

****

At the end of his examination, Shun-sensei packed away his equipment and sat down opposite Jun. “Everything seems fine with your youngling. How are things with you?”

Jun adjusted his clothes and sat up. He wriggled up the bed so that his back rested comfortably against the intricately carved headboard. “I'm not sure. I seem to be snapping at everyone.”

Shun raised an eyebrow. “Do you mean that literally? Do I need to wear gauntlets to protect myself the next time I examine you?”

Jun laughed and shook his head. “No, not literally. It’s more that I can't stand having anyone too near to me. It makes me agitated.” He looked down at his hands as if not trusting them to behave themselves, and added, “I slashed Sho’s hand for no reason, so on second thoughts, maybe you should protect yourself.”

“It’s perfectly normal for a breeding vampire. As you draw closer to your confinement your base instincts will come to the fore. It's entirely possible that by the time you give birth, your mate will be the only one you will tolerate coming anywhere near you, and even he will need to be wary. Until after the birth, the safety and welfare of your youngling will become your sole focus.”

“What about you? How will you be able to deliver my youngling?” Jun asked with a frown.

Shun smiled reassuringly. “Don't worry, over the past few months as I have been treating you, I have become imprinted in your mind as someone who poses no threat. You will instinctively recognize me, even when in a feral state.”

“Feral?” Jun plucked nervously at a button on his shirt. “So once I come back to myself, I won't remember the birth at all?”

“Not necessarily. Every case is different, and not all vampires turn feral,” Shun said calmly. “Please don't worry about something which might not even happen. Just try and relax, and take the next few months as they come.”

Jun sighed and slid down the bed. “Explain to me again why a vampire pregnancy lasts for two months longer than that of a human. I keep hoping that I misheard you the first five times you told me.”

“It is believed that a vampire foetus develops more slowly because of the vampire species’ extended life span.” Shun-sensei paused for a moment as Jun made a quiet harrumphing noise of displeasure. He pushed his glasses up his nose and carried on regardless. “But remember that in those last two months, your youngling will be sufficiently developed to be able to communicate their state of being to you through a weak telepathic link. It will be broken as soon as you birth your youngling, but even so, this is a level of bonding which Humans don't get to experience. Vampires are lucky in this respect.”

“Easy for someone who isn't nearly nine months pregnant to say,” Jun muttered, as his youngling gave him a sharp kick to the bladder.
