Summary : Masaki believes in fairytales and love at first sight and is waiting a little bit too impatiently for his love to finally arrive.
Every day Aiba Masaki would arrive at work with hope in his heart that today would be the day. Six months ago, accompanied by his best friend Ninomiya Kazunari he had gone to see a fortune teller. Nino had gone because he thought it would be a laugh and because Masaki was paying, but Masaki himself went because he was the type of person who believed in destiny and love at first sight, and every other cliché found in fairy tales. The old woman had predicted that he would meet his one true love by summer’s end and since that was only a few weeks away he was beginning to become more than a little desperate.
Much to Nino (who also worked with him at the coffee shop) and his grumpy boss’s disgust he had begun to stare soulfully and at close range into every customer's face in the hope that it would spark something magical. So far all he had gotten were terrified looks from panicked men and women as they ran out the door to escape his invasion into their personal space. His take home pay kept getting smaller and smaller as his boss kept deducting the cost of their unpaid bills from his wages.
He thought he'd finally hit the jackpot on the day that the sleepy eyed small man with long paint smudged fingers came into the shop and ordered a coffee which he promptly forgot about as he pulled out a sketch pad and began to draw. There was something about him that seemed special which made Masaki think that his time had finally arrived. He had just been about to try his close range smile when Nino had practically knocked him to the floor in his rush to offer the chubby cheeked man a refill of his still full cup. Although Nino would deny on pain of death the existence of love at first sight, he had been inseparable from the artist, whose name was Ohno Satoshi, ever since. If Masaki hadn't been so kind and nice he might have thought it to be unfair that the cynical Nino had the happy fairytale ending with his prince whilst he was stuck with kissing all the frogs in search of his own happy ending. Not literally of course. Masaki wouldn't just kiss any random man "just in case" as per Nino's suggestion. But being the type of person that he was it only confirmed his conviction that these things were fated and it would all happen for him too if only he was patient.
As it was, on the day that his love walked in to his life, he almost didn't even notice until it was just about too late. Who could blame him when the man in question was dressed in an absolutely ridiculous looking hat which made him look like a refugee from The Phantom of The Opera, and a thick pair of tinted glasses which concealed most of the rest of his face? He was also dressed in a ludicrously large overcoat with a pair of bare legs sticking out below, which considering how hot the day was, seemed to hint that he might possibly be mildly insane.
In a husky and trembling voice he ordered an iced tea with extra ice. When Masaki went to make the drink, Nino, dragging his attention away from sending filthy texts to his boyfriend elbowed him in the ribs saying with a laugh "I definitely think he's the one. He looks like a real keeper from here." Even Masaki who couldn't think badly of anybody was having trouble coming up with something positive to say about the oddly dressed man.
When he delivered the drink to the man's table he couldn't help but notice that he was staring at a photograph on his phone which showed a handsome man with big round eyes, slightly chipmunk like teeth and an arrogant looking smile. It could have been either sweat or tears running down his face that he was wiping away with handfuls of serviettes, but with the big glasses on it was kind of hard to tell. For once Masaki didn't try his soul mate test on the customer, even he, desperate as he was still had some standards.
The door pinged as Ohno shuffled in, as always looking like he had just gotten up, and considering that it was around eleven a.m. he probably had. He had a habit of staying up until the early hours either painting or being molested by Nino. Since Nino was at work, it was safe to say that he had probably been working.
Nino immediately leaped into his arms, hugging him tightly, before grabbing him by the hand and dragging him out the door. He barely paused to call over his shoulder "Bye. I'm taking an early lunch. You'll be OK by yourself won't you." The last part was said as a statement rather than as a question as he disappeared from sight.
Masaki, sighed to himself as he was left alone (it was a particularly slow day) with the possibly crying customer, who asked in a despondent voice for another iced tea.
While Masaki busied himself wiping down the other tables, the odd man finished his second drink and began to rummage in the many pockets of his unsuitably heavy coat. "Um, excuse me?" the man said softly as he stood up and walked over to the counter "I seem to have left my wallet behind."
Masaki sighed once again. Great, even when his customers didn't flee from him he still ended up being stuck with the bill. As he was thinking of a response he noticed that the man was swaying alarmingly and before he could react he was horrified to see him crumple to the ground in front of him in a dead faint.

Masaki leapt into action, turning the sign on the door to closed and locking it behind him. Looking at the pale, sweaty face, he realised that the man had probably overheated in his silly outfit, so he decided to try and make him more comfortable.
As he removed the hat and glasses, the unconscious man's face was finally revealed. It was a face blessed with strong features and forceful eyebrows. For some unknown reason his hair was black but with patchy orange blobs randomly scattered throughout. His plump lips were marked by a trio of delicately sprinkled moles. As he began to try and unbutton the unwieldy coat the man's eyes snapped open, and to his great surprise they were large and beautifully coloured. As their eyes locked Masaki's heart began to pound and his pulse race.
With a startled shriek, the stranger scrambled to his feet, snatching the coat out of Masaki's hands and shot over to the door, fumbling madly at the latch before launching himself out the door. Masaki was left with his abandoned hat and glasses and an overwhelming sense of confusion.

When Nino and Ohno returned from lunch Masaki retold his adventure to them, earning a smack in the back of the head from Nino. "How could you be so stupid? Why would you lock yourself in here with a possible sex maniac?"
Even Ohno had to agree that he had been pretty foolish "Do you think he was naked under the coat? Perhaps he wanted you to peel his banana? "
Nino leaped over and smacked Ohno on the head for good measure "That's our private game; don't go around corrupting my poor innocent and completely stupid friend here."
"Oi, stop calling me stupid. And what's this about bananas? "

A couple of weeks passed bringing Masaki closer to his deadline and although he tried to remain hopeful he felt as if his chance of happiness was slowly slipping away. Nino and Ohno were even closer than ever. In fact they decided to go away together for a weekend. Apparently even though Ohno dressed like a derelict, he had made quite a lot of money from his art and owned a cottage at the beach. He planned to spend the weekend fishing, but if what Nino had tucked away in his luggage was any indication of intent, he would be lucky to ever make it to the water.
Masaki was at a loose end so he agreed to cover Nino's shift and since it was their grumpy boss’s wedding anniversary he had bailed as well. Once again it was a slow morning and he was amusing himself by singing and dancing as he wiped down the empty tables for the fifth time in the last half hour. He ducked out the back to rinse out his cloth just as the door pinged "Please take a seat. I won't be a second.” he called over his shoulder.
He bounced back into the shop with menu in hand only to grind to a halt because his customer wasn't sitting at a table but was instead standing at the counter with a large bunch of flowers in his hand and a shy smile on his face.

The man was stunningly handsome and beautifully dressed, the v-necked shirt highlighting his delicate collar bones and long neck. "C-can I help you with something?" Masaki stuttered.
"You've already helped me. That's why these are for you."
"Huh?"
"First please let me introduce myself properly. My name is Matsumoto Jun and I want to apologize for my behaviour when I was in here two weeks ago. I ran away without paying and I think I may have scared you at that time and I am so very sorry."
Masaki suddenly realized that there were three little moles dotted across Matsumoto's perfectly kissable looking lips and a light bulb suddenly lit up over his head. "Just a second. Please sit down." he darted out the back and returned clutching the ugly hat and glasses. "I believe these are yours?"
The handsome young man blushed a deep red "Please let me explain." He pulled out his phone and showed Masaki the photograph of the arrogant looking man that he had been crying over. "This is Sho, my boyfriend, or rather ex boyfriend as of two weeks ago." He said with suspiciously damp eyes.
Masaki couldn't help himself as his hand crept across the table to rest reassuringly on top of Matsumoto's. The man gave him another shy smile and Masaki gave him his usual bright-enough-to-eclipse-the-sun grin in return.
Feeling encouraged, the embarrassed man continued his story "I came home early and didn't let Sho know. I wanted it to be a surprise. He'd seemed a bit distant lately so I thought some quality time would be good for us." As he spoke, his throat felt like it was closing over.
Masaki, sensing he was struggling, got up and brought them back some cold drinks, taking hold of the other's hand once again when he sat down.
Matsumoto took a sip of his drink and continued “I wanted to make myself look good for him so I decided to put a colour through my hair. I was just about ready to rinse it out when I heard the front door and then voices inside the apartment. It was Sho and he had a man with him.” His voice faltered again and Masaki gave his hand a reassuring squeeze.
“They were laughing ….and then I heard other…noises…” he dropped his head “I opened the door a crack and peeked through. They were on the sofa doing….things… to each other. I freaked out and confronted them.” Angry tears were running down his cheeks now and Masaki wanted to reach out and wipe them away.
“We argued. It turned out that they’d been seeing each other for a while and Sho was just waiting for the right moment to tell me it was over. He told me that he’d never loved me. He said that I was cheaper than paying for a maid. His new bitch slapped me in the face and told me to leave. Sho..he didn’t do anything to stop him.” He stood up and began to pace rapidly back and forth across the room “I freaked out and just ran. I was only wearing my underwear and hadn’t rinsed my hair. I just grabbed what I could from the coat stand and fled. I was a complete mess. I went to a public toilet and tried to fix my hair, but as you could see, the colour had cooked it to a frazzle by that stage. I didn’t know what to do and I was just about dying in that stupid coat, so I came in here for a drink. I l-loved him with all my h-heart and he just t-threw me away…”
He was crying harder by now and Masaki did the only thing he could do. He once again went and locked the front door and took the trembling man into his arms making soothing noises and rubbing his back.
Matsumoto buried his face into the side of Masaki’s neck, breathing in his calming scent “I don’t remember much after that. I was so hot and upset and then I realised that I didn’t have any money and I wanted to apologise and leave you my address so that you’d know that I would come back and pay and then I realised that I didn’t have an address anymore and then I got really dizzy.”
He was talking so fast and breathing so rapidly Masaki was worried that he might faint again so he wrapped his arm around his waist and guided him to the sofa in the corner of the shop.
The distraught man continued “The next think I knew I was laying on the ground looking up into the most warm and caring eyes I had ever seen….” His words trailed off as he caught Masaki’s eyes once more and they sat and stared at each other in wordless fascination. He grasped one of Masaki’s hands and brought it to his lips in a soft kiss before dropping it back down to his lap, but not letting go. They stayed like this for a very long time, until a frantic banging on the door woke them out of their trance.
As Masaki floated over to unlock the door and let in a very disgruntled caffeine addict it felt as if his feet barely touched the floor. He silently vowed to go back to the fortune teller as soon as possible and see what she had to say on the subject of marriage.

Date: 2016-04-02 09:56 pm (UTC)I liked the Ohmiya bits too, so I'm writing a follow-up part seen through Nino's eyes, because I think they are so cute together. Especially since Nino was poking fun at Masaki for being too romantic.....

Date: 2016-04-08 09:23 pm (UTC)I just felt like making Sho a bit nasty in this one for a change (there has to be a villain in every fairy-tale).
