Summary: “So what’s with all this Christmas crap?” Nino asked, poking derisively at a perfectly placed strand of tinsel.
A/N: Welcome to my random Arashi Christmas Drabbles - each under 1000ish words long. How many there will be is also random – depending on my level of Christmasosity (and yes even I am getting sick of the word).
“So what’s with all this Christmas crap?” Nino asked, poking derisively at a perfectly placed strand of tinsel.
“Jun loves decorating the apartment for the holidays,” Sho replied, carefully pushing the tinsel back into place.
This would be their first Christmas together in a three person relationship and everything was new to Nino, who had only been with the other two for a few months.
“Do I have to join in? I’m not such a big fan of Christmas.” Nino was looking at the single strand of multi-coloured lights hanging in the window in distaste.
“Whatever you do don’t let Jun know,” Sho replied with a shudder. He sometimes still had flashbacks to the time he unsuspectingly criticized Jun’s new egg nog recipe. It was a miracle that Jun had agreed to move in with him after such an error of judgement. That Christmas Sho had nervously presented Jun with the key to his apartment along with a cheesy note about owning the key to his heart and much to his surprise Jun hadn’t even hesitated for a second before agreeing. It was only later that Sho found out about Jun’s reason for wanting Christmas to be perfect.
“Aren’t we a bit too old for this?” Nino was referring to the three monogrammed stockings that were hanging from the mantelpiece. He couldn’t understand why Sho was so indulgent towards Jun and his liking for all things festive.
Sho patted the seat of the sofa and moved a small cushion embroidered with reindeer out of the way to make room for his lover, “Nino, sit down. There's something I need to tell you about Jun.”
There was something in Sho’s voice that made Nino suddenly feel cold.
“When Jun was small his mother made every Christmas special for him. She was a single mother who raised him by herself after his father died. She didn’t make much money so they would hand make decorations every year and make their little apartment as cheerful as possible.”
“If Jun’s mother is so special why didn’t she come to visit him in the hospital last month?” Nino interrupted brusquely. He had been terrified when Jun had been diagnosed with pneumonia and had spent every available minute by his bedside only going home to sleep when Sho had returned early from his business trip due to join him in watching over their lover.
“Because she died,” Sho replied abruptly. “She was working as a Hostess at night on top of her day job and she was hit by a car on the way home one evening. Jun’s grandmother took custody of him. She told him that Christmas was a waste of time and that if his mother hadn’t spent money on presents for him then she wouldn’t have been in a position to be killed.”
Nino’s face had turned pale and he clutched at Sho’s hands for comfort. “But wouldn’t that make him hate Christmas? I mean…if his mother was killed at Christmas time…”
“Quite the opposite, in fact. He believes that celebrating Christmas would make his mother happy. As soon as he was able, he moved out of his Grandmother’s house and made a promise to himself to make this a special time each year.” Sho pulled Nino towards him and brushed a stray tear from his cheek before adding, “So please, just go along with his plans no matter how silly you think they might be.
Nino nodded mutely, suddenly seeing the garish decorations in a new light, but feeling a little left out. "Why didn't he tell me this himself when he obviously told you? Doesn't he trust me enough?" Did this mean that Jun loved him less than Sho?
Sho could see the way that Nino was thinking and hastened to reassure him. "Nino, Jun loves you exactly the same way that he loves me. He didn't tell me either. His old school friends Aiba and Ohno came to visit and while Jun was busy in the kitchen I happened to mention that Jun almost disembowelled me for not liking his egg nog last Christmas. They told me the whole story and made me promise to not let on to Jun that I know. I planned to tell you as soon as we had a spare minute alone.”
Nino took a shuddering breath and sat up straight, casting a look around the apartment with its sparse but carefully chosen decorations. “Oh, I think we can do so much better than this.”
++++
Jun was feeling blue as he walked towards their shared apartment. He tried to honour his mother each Christmas, but it was becoming harder with each passing year. Sho tolerated his decorations with good humour but he knew that Nino probably hated them with every fibre of his being. He knew that if he explained his reasoning then they would go along with it just to make him feel better, but he dearly wished that they would embrace the season for its own sake, just as his mother had encouraged him to when he was small.
He was distracted from his thoughts by a strange glow that seemed to emanate from the floor that they lived on. When he took a closer look it actually appeared to be coming from their actual apartment. With a puzzled frown he ignored the slow elevator in favour of running up the stairs to the third floor.
After fumbling his key in the lock for a few seconds he finally managed to fling it open, gasping in surprise at the sight laid before his eyes.
The entire apartment had been transformed into a winter wonderland. His own few decorations had been eclipsed with an explosion of flashing coloured lights and tinsel. The colours were so bright that he had to half close his eyes to be able to make out two figures silhouetted against the light.
Nino was clutching an enormous beaker of egg nog and Sho was proffering a plate of gingerbread cookies. “Merry Christmas,” they chorused in tandem, the pair of them wearing two of the ugliest Christmas sweaters that Jun had ever laid eyes on.
Afterwards Nino tried to convince the other two that it was the bright lights that made the tears run freely down his cheeks and not expression of sheer joy and love that Jun’s face was wreathed in as he pulled his two lovers into a crushing embrace.
