I'm sure that Jun would have persisted at school and perhaps have succeeded at college as well just like Shun did.
But I think he just sort of froze when he found out about being a Carrier and just gave in to what other people expected of him
The hard thing is that he loves Sho so very much and wants nothing more than to be with him, but he also knows that at the moment that wouldn't be a good thing for either of them.
Hopefully this is what Sho needs to appreciate Jun more.
