A Lofty Proposal

Pairing : Sakumoto

Genre: Romance, fluff

Rating: R

Disclaimer: I do not own Arashi or any of its members – this is purely a work of fiction

Summary: Of all the places he might have been on his birthday, this was probably the last on the list, but the reason behind it made his heart beat faster than the exertion from the climb.

A/N: The big day is finally here! Best wishes for a very happy day to Arashi’s baby Jun.

And happy one year Arashian anniversary to my always lovely and extremely supportive friend [personal profile] matsupie. *hugs* I would send you Jun if I could but since he is busy elsewhere I hope that this will do instead.

They struggled up the last twenty meters until they reached the peak. Sho was looking suspiciously red faced and nervous as he looked around see if there were any other hikers within sight.

On second thoughts, there still seem to be another small hill to climb until they truly were at the peak, not that it really looked any different to where they had just been. The sky was just as blue and the view still as breathtaking.

Jun felt butterflies dancing in his stomach. Unless he was completely wrong, Sho was about to do it at last. He tried to compose his face. Should he look surprised? Should he cry? He realised that he was over thinking and should just go with the flow and enjoy the moment.

Of all the places he might have wanted to be on his birthday, this was probably the last on the list, but the reason behind it made his heart beat faster than the exertion from the climb.

++++

It had been almost two months since his suspicions had first been aroused.

They had just finished shooting their latest PV and he was getting changed back into his own clothes. Jun was looking forward to getting home and giving a long soak in the bath after removing the sticky products from his hair and the thick makeup from his face. His eyes were burning with tiredness and he had already removed his contacts and replaced them with his glasses.

He thought he was ready to leave until he started putting his personal jewellery back on after handing back the items he had worn during filming. It was then that he realized that his favourite ring was missing. The others had already packed up and left, his had been the last solo to shoot and there had been technical problems that had held things up even longer.

After frantically searching through his bag, turning the contents out all over the table, and searching the floor, he finally admitted defeat. With a sigh, he slowly packed everything back into his bag, sad at the thought of losing a piece of jewellery that he had owned for over ten years. He had bought it as a present to himself after the success of HanaDan and it meant much more to him than its actual value.

Sho had been sympathetic when he arrived home and emptied his bag once again just in case it was stuck inside the lining somewhere, running the bath for him after helping him to repack his bag for use the next day.

He had sat feeling depressed as Sho gently scrubbed his back and shampooed his hair before rinsing him off and guiding him to the bath. He returned two minutes later with a large glass of red wine and one of his favourite scented candles, both of which he declared to be soothing to the nerves.

Two days later when they all arrived for a group photo session Aiba came bounding over towards him clutching something shiny in his hand.

“Matsujun, I must have accidently put your ring in my bag the other day. I just found it this morning when I was looking for my water bottle.”

Jun just happened to catch a glimpse of the look that passed between Sho and Aiba, reflected in the mirror on the opposite wall. Aiba seemed to be about to say something else, but a quick glare from Sho cut him off before he could speak.

Jun could have sworn that he saw the ring in his bag after the others had already gone and he and Sho were the last ones left in the dressing room, but perhaps he was mistaken and since he was just so happy to have his ring back he didn’t bother to question Aiba any further.

++++

A couple of weeks later Jun was sitting on the battered sofa in their green room flipping through a magazine, looking at options for his birthday present from Sho. He found that everything worked much better for the both of them if he left clear hints to his boyfriend regarding his likes and dislikes.

Unlike Nino, who would practically rip your credit card out of your hand and make the purchase himself, he preferred to gently steer Sho in the right direction. He would point out current fashion trends and preferred designers and retailers, rather than asking for anything specific.

This was a survival tactic he had perfected long ago since with Sho’s dress sense he would have ended up with entire wardrobe full of unsuitable clothes. Although he did have a small secret collection of ugly souvenir t-shirts that his boyfriend had brought him back from trips overseas. These were kept well hidden in the back of a drawer as he found it comforting to sleep in them whenever Sho was away and he was left alone in their apartment and feeling a little lonely, not that he would ever admit it to a living soul.

The cushion beside him suddenly dipped as Ohno plopped himself down beside him; leaning against his body even though there was more than enough room for the two of them. After so many years of friendship, this was something that Jun took as perfectly normal, even when the smaller man wriggled under his arm and placed his head on his lap, sighing happily when he found the perfectly comfortable position for a quick nap.

“Hmmm. Jun-kun your birthday is coming up, hey?” he mumbled.

“Mmm. I’m just having a look for possible a possible present at the moment.” Jun replied, waving the magazine over Ohno’s face. “You know Sho likes to plan ahead.”

“True.” Ohno said wiggling happily as Jun gently massaged his head with his free hand. “But you know sometimes the best gift isn’t a material one. Spending time with a loved one is just as important.”

“Is there something that you’re trying to tell me? Do you know something about my birthday?”

“Nuh-uh. I’m just saying that even if someone wanted to take you to a place you wouldn’t normally consider going to then perhaps you should give it a try. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, and if someone means a lot to you then their happiness is sometimes more important than your own.”

Jun’s mind began buzzing with possibilities after the not so subtle talk from Arashi’s leader.

Sho was planning on taking him on a trip for his birthday? To somewhere he was going to hate?

More investigation was needed and he knew exactly who would be easiest to crack.

++++

“Sorry Jun-Jun but I can’t have dinner with you. I’m really busy for the next few weeks. I don't think I have any free time all the way up until your birthday,” Aiba squeaked, backing away as fast as possible “As as matter of fact I don’t even have time for lunch, or even a drink, or actually the time to talk to you right now.”

Jun made a lunge for him, but Aiba was too fast and shot out the door, almost flattening Nino as he was coming in.

“I believe you are seeking certain information, regarding birthday plans being made by a certain person?” Nino asked, raising a questioning eyebrow.

“I might be,” Jun replied, immediately wary when Nino was offering to be helpful. He had been caught before in one of Nino’s evil traps and didn’t wish to repeat the experience.

“Step into my office,” Nino said, escorting him to the bathroom and locking the door behind them.

“How much is it going to cost me?” Jun asked cynically.

“Consider this your one freebie for the year. After this we will return to the usual arrangement,”
Nino replied as he sat down, making himself comfortable on the closed toilet seat.

Jun was astonished, but decided to take his chance while Nino was in such a generous mood, asking “Do you know what Sho has planned for my birthday?”

“I do,” Replied Nino smugly “But if I tell you now, you will kill me.”

“Me? Don’t you mean Sho?”

“Nope. Trust me; you will definitely hate me afterwards if I spill my guts.”

“Leader suggested that Sho might be taking me somewhere I don’t want to go?”

“Oh, no, it’s definitely a place you’ve always wanted to end up together with Sho.”

“???”

“Look, I can’t really say any more apart from agreeing with Leader. If Sho asks you to go somewhere with him for your birthday, instead of buying you a flashy present definitely say yes; because if he becomes discouraged the opportunity may never present itself again.”

“Nino, I don’t really understand what you’re trying to tell me.”

“Just follow your heart and see where it leads you,” said Nino as he headed towards the door.

Jun looked at him in astonishment as he left, thinking that if Nino was starting to sound like a Disney movie then things must be serious.

++++

A week before his birthday Jun came home unexpectedly early. Earlier that afternoon he had accidentally stumbled across Sho taking delivery of a small package in a very furtive fashion outside the studios. The courier hadn't looked anything like a normal one, dressed as he was in a well cut dark suit and tie and he had bowed to Sho as he left, carrying an expensive looking briefcase with him as he climbed into a large silver Mercedes.

He knew that Sho had spotted him watching the transaction from the other side of the road. Sho’s face had first turned deathly white, before flushing a deep and guilty red but he had feigned innocence and sailed past Jun into the building as if his boyfriend hadn’t been there at all.

Jun had decided not to press the point in public, preferring to see if he could pry something out of Sho when he had him at his mercy at home that evening.

Sho was sitting on the sofa looking casually innocent, a look that usually meant that he was hiding something. Jun, curious about what his boyfriend was trying to cover up, sat down beside him and was about to quiz him on the subject when Sho suddenly pounced on him. Caught in a breathless tangle of limbs and tongues Jun temporarily forgot about everything that wasn't connected to his dick as Sho shoved his hand down the front of his jeans while asking "Bed? Or do you want to do it right here?"

Even though he knew that Sho was just attempting to distract him from any possibly awkward questions Jun could still only whimper in reply as Sho squeezed hard saying "On second thoughts we could take a shower together first if you like?"

Removing Sho's hand and grabbing his ass in reply Jun responded with a grin "Only if I get to fuck you while we are in there."

Sho blushed and nodded in agreement before going to grab the lube from the bedroom.

Jun, his attempt to find out what Sho was hiding thwarted, was more than happy to make the best of it as his naked boyfriend joined him in the shower. There would always be another chance later.

As he was laying in bed later that night, Sho already asleep in a worn out heap beside him, Jun thought about whether he really did want to find out what his boyfriend was up to. If his suspicions were correct, and after putting together the missing ring that miraculously turned back up, the not so subtle hints from his band mates and Sho’s general behaviour, he was sure they were, then he didn’t want to ruin the moment when it came.

Of course on the other hand if Sho didn’t give him a proper birthday present and dragged him somewhere horrible and didn’t actually propose to him at the end of it, then he would make everyone pay.

++++

Two days later Sho grabbed him by the hand as soon as they got home and pulled him over to the sofa. The expression on his face was a mixture of excitement and fear as he handed over an envelope.

“This is sort of a pre-notification of your birthday present.” he began in a formal tone.

Jun wanted to laugh at the seriousness in Sho’s voice but was dying to know if his suspicions about his gift were correct.

“Um, I thought this year we could go away for a couple of nights. I’ve spoken to our managers and cleared our schedule.”

“Can you give me a hint about where we’re going so I know what to pack? I need to make sure that I have clothing with me that’s suitable for the climate there.” Jun said, fishing for clues.

“Um, actually that’s what’s in the envelope. It’s a list of things that you will need.”

“Oh, like a swimsuit?”

“Errr, more like some sturdy boots.”

As Jun ripped open the envelope and read Sho’s list, his first instinct was to freak out. This was obviously not going to be a relaxing time at a luxury resort, not if the wide brimmed hat, sunscreen and insect repellent at the top of this list was any indicator.

His heart sank at the thought but before he opened his mouth to complain, he remembered the wise advice of his friends and his own suspicions and decided to hold his tongue. Instead he just put in a few token complaints so that Sho wouldn’t suspect that he knew anything about what he had planned for the day.

++++

On the morning of his birthday, Jun was woken by Sho at a time of the morning that was too awful to even contemplate. After receiving a perfunctory kiss and a “Happy Birthday” Sho dragged him out the front door before he even realized what was happening.

Thankfully he was able to doze for most of the journey, which wasn’t easy as Sho kept up a nervous stream of chatter the entire way. When Jun was woken by an eager shake by his boyfriend he opened his eyes to be greeted by the sight of the small but charming hotel they would be staying in for the next two nights silhouetted against a breathtaking vista of beautiful mountain scenery.

He had to admit that it was an incredibly beautiful spot, but he didn’t have much of a chance to admire it before Sho dragged him to their room, made him change into hiking clothes and insisted that they climb the nearby hiking trail up the mountain while the light was still good.

It was about this time that he started wondering how to react when the moment came; he certainly had plenty of time to think about it during the long and arduous climb to the peak.

++++

After a bit more of a struggle they were finally at the very top. They stood together taking in the view and trying to regulate their breathing. No other people were in sight, mostly preferring to rest and eat their picnics in a more sheltered spot further back down away from the peak.

Jun moved away slightly, feigning a show of interest in a lone bird that was circling nearby. He could hear Sho rummaging in his rucksack and mumbling under his breath. When Jun felt that he’d given his nervous boyfriend enough time he casually turned around to face him once again.

Sho was down on one knee holding a ring box out in a badly shaking hand. He was looking at Jun with such a mixture of nervousness, hope and love that Jun wanted to immediately leap on him, but he knew that he had to wait for Sho to speak first.

Jun had rehearsed this moment in his head so many times since he’d figured out what Sho was planning, trying to come up with the most appropriate response but now that it had finally arrived he had no control over his emotions at all.

Sho was looking up at him with huge scared eyes, his voice husky as he said “I had this big romantic speech planned to try and convince you, but now the moment is here I am quite sure of the strength of our love so I only need to ask this one question.” He paused to clear his throat before adding “Will you marry me?”

Suddenly Jun couldn’t swallow as he nodded and managed to croak a tiny “yes please” in response, his eyes conveying all of his unspoken feelings, his heart thumping, his pulse racing, blood fizzing through his veins like champagne.

Knowing that time was short before someone else arrived at their location, Sho opened the box and carefully placed the ring on Jun’s finger. It was, of course, a perfect fit. Their smiles were bright enough to eclipse the sun as they shared the never to be repeated moment.

After once again checking that they were alone Sho drew Jun closer and risked a kiss, knowing how dangerous it was to show such a connection in public, but unable to let this moment pass without sealing it with a show of affection. It was the same as the other thousands of kisses they had shared together in the past, but somehow different at the same time, holding as it did, the promise of a lifelong commitment.

Sho excitedly grabbed his phone and took a selfie of them, cheek to cheek, the magnificent vista as a background. Jun, realizing that Sho was about to start letting everyone know the good news, and wanting to drag out this moment where only the two of them knew for a bit longer, snatched the phone from his fiancées hand and held it out of reach.

“Nooo.” Sho whined “I just want to let the guys know.”

“And we will, just a bit later.” Jun said, tucking the phone into his pocket after switching it off.

“But I have to ring the hotel and arrange for them to put the champagne on ice and then confirm the booking for the special celebration dinner that I have pre-ordered for us at the restaurant in the village this evening.”

“Somebody was feeling pretty darn sure of himself, wasn’t he?” Jun said with a fond smile as he took Sho’s hand and squeezed it briefly before quickly dropping it as they heard the voices of more hikers approaching in the distance while saying quietly in his best bedroom voice “We can pick up the champagne on the way back to our room where I plan on taking you to bed and spending the rest of the afternoon thoroughly demonstrating what you have to look forward to when we’re married; but by the time I’m finished with you your legs will probably be far too wobbly to make it to the restaurant so perhaps we’d better see if they deliver.”

Sho gulped visibly at the thought and eagerly started the descent back to the bottom of the mountain pausing to look back over his shoulder at Jun who was just standing there looking amused.

“Come on then, hurry up because I also happen to have another special birthday present for you in my bag and I think that you will rather enjoy experiencing what I have been imagining doing to you with it since I bought it.” Sho called whilst making some rather rude and artistic descriptive hand gestures as he bounded down the slope.

“Best. Birthday. Ever.” Jun said with a wide grin as he looked at the yellow gold ring inlaid with a square cut blood red ruby sparkling on his finger before happily chasing after his future husband.

How romantic and sweet <3 I love that Jun slowly realized what was going to happen, but in the end kept it as a secret too, because he didn't want to ruin the moment for both of them. (*LOL* though at Sho climbing a mountain with Jun to propose! He is lucky he has some good friends that warned Jun in advance :D)

Thanks so much for this lovely fic! ♥

Loved that everyone knew what was going to happen (including Jun xD). Expect Sho to get everyone involved in his plans... and Jun to find out he's planning something xD
"Of course on the other hand if Sho didn’t give him a proper birthday present and dragged him somewhere horrible and didn’t actually propose to him at the end of it, then he would make everyone pay." LOL, TRUE! If the gift had ended up being something else, Jun would have murdered them all, hahahahahaha!
Thanks for sharing this with us ^^

wahhahahahha Thank you so much! I'm happy to know that
I can make you laugh with my comments!
Perhaps I should also remind myself not to read your stories at work!
I like how you insert sarcasm and humor in your stories and they
really feed the inner craziness in me! hahahahahh
When I laugh, it really takes me a long time to calm down so
you can now imagine the terrified faces of those people who see me
while I'm in my own world..hahhaha i'm a little creepy....

Thank you very much! <3

I knew that Sho is planning something! And of course, we have to insert "schedule-crazy-Sho" in here (I always love him that way).

I don't know what go into Sho's brain to propose on a mountain of all placed (and it's Jun we're talking about here!) but I love how he did it. XD I can imagine him huffing while actually trying to propose...

This is so adorable. THANKS! (and Happy birthday to our Jun!)
