The edge of the photograph crumbled beneath the pressure of Jun's thumb as he ran it across the yellowing surface.

The face of the man who had once been so dear to him was fading from the picture, but remained clear in his mind.

There were those who begged to be turned; eager to be bestowed with the eternal life granted to the vampire kind despite the fact that it had been deemed an illegal act, only allowable under exceptional circumstances.

Jun had not been one of those seeking immortality. The decision had been made by his parents without his knowledge. After the doctors could do no more, and he had hovered close to death, they had put into action the plans which had been made when he had first been diagnosed with the disease which would inevitably take his life. Their immense wealth and political clout had made the impossible possible, and saved the life of their only son against his express wishes.

When he woke and realised what he had become, Jun had begged them to reverse the process, but what was done, could not be undone.

When his lover saw him afterwards, Sho had shed happy tears and held him tight enough to cut off Jun’s breath. Except that he no longer breathed, and never would again.

Sho was a precious gift, and he was the one who kept Jun sane for the first few years after he was turned. His love and never ending support remained the one constant in Jun’s non-life. And even when Jun allowed the darkness to possess him, Sho was always there ready to pick up the pieces when Jun eventually returned to himself.

Although the temptation to keep Sho for himself forever was strong, Jun loved him too much to turn him into what he had become. The words of apology were on his lips, when Sho confessed that he too wished to remain as he was. Even as they cried together, Sho promised that he would seek Jun out in his next life, and the next, and the next, until they could be together again.

As the years passed, Sho aged, and he sometimes doubted that Jun could still find him as attractive as he once did. It was hard to look at Jun, who would forever stay at the peak of his beauty, his looks frozen in time like a fly in amber, and then look at the reflection of his own lined face and the threads of silver in his hair.

To Jun though, Sho was just as handsome as he ever was, and he treasured every year they spent together, while trying to ignore the clock inside his head counting down the time left to them.

After many more years Jun wept and held Sho tight enough to cut off his breath. Except that Sho longer breathed, and never would again.

And now, all that remained was the fragile photograph in Jun’s hand, which would soon turn to dust, as the subject had done centuries before, and the belief that one day soon they would be reunited.
